What does 那咋了 mean?
那咋了 is the internet's favorite shrug. You use it when someone points out something about you, or when you catch yourself in an awkward moment, to say "yeah, and? It doesn't bother me." It captures the mood of 反内耗 (refusing to drain yourself with overthinking) and of not living for other people's approval. The tone is cheerful and a bit cheeky rather than aggressive, and it is often used as a punchline after admitting something mildly embarrassing. It pairs well with the anti-内卷 attitude of opting out of pointless pressure.
Where does 那咋了 come from?
It spread from Douyin creator 鸭鸭米, who posted livestream clips in early June 2024 using 那咋了 as an all-purpose reply to everything. Other creators and media accounts copied the format that summer, and it appeared on several 2024 buzzword lists, including Douyin's annual meme roundup and the top ten internet buzzwords chosen by 《语言文字周报》.
