What does 硬控 mean?

In games, a “hard control” skill stuns or freezes an opponent so they cannot act. As slang, 硬控 describes being stopped in your tracks by something: a cute animal clip, a catchy song, a gorgeous photo, or something so baffling you cannot look away. The typical pattern is “X 硬控我 N 秒” (“X hard-controlled me for N seconds”), with the number used for comic effect. It is almost always lighthearted and often a compliment, close to English “I'm transfixed” or “this stopped my scroll”.

Where does 硬控 come from?

The term comes from MOBAs and other competitive games, where hard-control skills such as stuns, freezes and knock-ups leave a player helpless for a moment. In 2024 it jumped from gamer slang into everyday social media, and the language magazine 《咬文嚼字》 (Yaowen Jiaozi) named it one of its top ten buzzwords of 2024.
